Sustainability

Pillars Brewery is dedicated to having a positive impact on the world, including the environment and our community. Sustainability is at the core of our decision making. We have invested in equipment and implemented a range of strategies to reduce our carbon footprint. We're not perfect...yet! But we aim to be. That's why Pillars has pledged to become carbon neutral by 2030 at the latest. We'd love to tell you a bit about how we are working towards our sustainability goals.

Switch 2 Zero
Carbon Offsets
We have calculated and offset our 2023 and 2024 Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions, which is the beginning of our journey to net zero. Scope 1 and 2 emissions refers to direct emissions generated by the brewery and indirect emissions generated by purchased energy, such as gas and electricity. Pillars will actively work to calculate emissions from Scope 3 sources (indirect emissions generated by our value chain) and continue to act upon the insights we have gained from our efforts thus far.
You can find our annual carbon offset progress report here.

Be Part of the Solution
Ordering beer direct from us significantly lowers your carbon footprint by reducing transport emissions by 82% and 87% compared to ordering beer from Germany or the Czech Republic.
It’s an easy sustainability win for hospitality businesses, not only are you saving the planet, but you’re also enjoying award-winning beer.

Brewing reductions
We use heat recovery when brewing. Cool water is passed through a heat exchange when cooling hot wort. The cool water is heated as it passes the wort through the heat exchange leaving it ready to use for the next brew.
We have invested in yeast propagation. It has always been one of our quality goals to bring all critical elements of production in house. This has a great environmental benefit as our yeast was sent via air freight from Europe due to it being a live product that shouldn’t spend long in the haulage network.
Insulation
All heating and cooling pipework is insulated with high-quality insulation. We have a program to replace old insulation with the latest product when it gets damaged, as when insulation gets breached and wet it reduces its thermal insulating effect significantly. Poorly insulated or uninsulated pipes can cause an increase of 20-25% in energy consumption.
Energy Champion
We have appointed an internal Energy Champion who has been tasked with tracking energy and water usage to better tackle our brewery carbon footprint. With more information on our energy usage we will be better informed when making decisions in this area.
Partners
All of our waste is either recycled or used to produce energy. Our bin recycling partner sends monthly reports on landfill diversion which is at 100% for all waste generated by the brewery.
Our small pack boxes are made responsibly.
We work with like minded companies suppliers for our merchandise. All of our clothing is created by companies with sustainability goals.
People
We have joined the Bike2Work scheme encouraging staff to cycle where possible.
